Subject: My Favorite Show of the 80's
Very good recording of my favorite show of the 80's. Jerry is so far out in front for his solos and he is just nimble and perfect throughout. This one starts at the very top levels with a monster Shakedown and does not slow down until the very last note of Baby Blue. Best versions of so many songs, TLEO, BRRB, Deal, Let it Grow, He's gone and a cosmos crushing Sunshine Daydream. But strangest of all animals is the tremendous Woman are Smarter. A song I pretty much despise, but not this one!
The AUD recording is damn fine and gives a very good insight into the energy of the night. There are a few instances of distortion - mostly due to Jerry being 3X as loud as usual for this time period - for him, more like a '73 volume level than anything else I have heard in the 80's. The beginnings of a few first set songs are clipped off - you lose the classic "if you see any of us disappear in a shower of sparks, don't be surprised" intro to TLEO. You really shouldn't stop the tape between songs. With this recording you can hear more of the band, the Wise recordings are extremely Jerry heavy (not a bad thing at all), the SBD has no Jerry - which means his stage volume was through the roof. The tapers were all huddled under tarps only 10-15 rows from the stage - I was 3rd row. You can really hear the rain pounding on the tarps on this recording.
The recording is a 4 but the show is a 1,000,000,000 rounds out to a 5, and I don't find very many 80's shows to be 5's . This one is. One of my first stops when they finally invent a time machine.

This is as good as any other recording of the famous July 28th almost Stephen show at the Rocks. Rumors swirled around like Swirler use to at shows. Those of you on tour in the 80'2 know who am talking about... All that said this is a extremely good sounding show. Grab it for sure. Am giving this one 5 stars because everything about it sound scene and rumors along with smoking hot versions of all songs in my book.
I myself only missed the 78 and 79 Red Rocks shows and over all this night might be best set list. Althea and Let it Grow 2nd set. yummie
